HULI HULI CHICKEN. Huli Huli (turn) Chicken is typically available as fundraisers, and so found at roadside stands set up for only a day or two. Mostly found along the highways. Buy a couple and prepare to hunker down!
KAUAI CHOCOLATE COMPANY. Nice mixes of milk and dark chocolate with tropical and traditional flavors. Open noon - 5 pm daily. From Koloa, take Koloa Rd (Hwy 530) west to lite. Turn left. About 5 mi past next lite look for McD's on left. Turn left onto the short Hwy 541 just before McD's. Kauai Chocolate is in the middle of the Port Allen Marina Shopping complex on the rite. KOLOA FISH MARKET. Great local fresh fish, pupu (appetizer) platters, and plate lunches. Their seared ahi is ono (delicious). On Koloa Rd in Koloa on the east side of town across from the post office. 742-6199.

LAWAI GENERAL STORE. Decent beer selection, local style snacks, shave ice and more. Open to 11 PM. From Koloa, take Koloa Rd (Hwy 530) west 3 - 4 mi into Lawai. Look for store on left after coming down hill.


PAPALANI GELATO. A bevy of smooth, fantastic flavors in frozen desserts. From Koloa Chevron, take Poipu Rd south to roundabout. Take 3rd exit for about 1/2 mi, then turn left, and quickly rite into Poipu Shopping Village. Papalani Gelato is along the rear. 742-2663.www.papalanigelato.com.

ROADSIDE FRUIT STANDS. Good places for locally grown papayas, bananas, pineapple, avocadoes, lychee, and more. Payment is on honor system. Many stands are seasonal, and appear along Koloa Rd, Omao Rd, and elsewhere. Here's three long term ones on the south side.

One and Two. From Koloa, take Koloa Rd (Hwy 530) west into Lawai. Turn left onto twisty Lauoho Rd, just before Lawai General Store. first stand is 1/2 mi on rite, second another 1/4 mi on left.


Three. Just after second stand turn left onto Waha Rd. Find stand another 1/4 mi on rite.

ROAST DUCK. Buy whole or half a roast duck to go at Wong's Chinese Restaurant in Hanapepe. From Koloa take Koloa Rd (Hwy 530) west to Hwy 50. Turn left, and stay on highway about 8 mi into Hanapepe. Wong's is on left, just past Hanapepe River bridge. 335-5066.

SUNSHINE MARKETS. These are Kaua'i farmers' markets at regular times and places. The Koloa Sunshine market is on Monday at noon (until about 1 PM) at Anne Knudsen Park. From Koloa, take Mahulia Rd (Hwy 520) towards Lihu'e. Park is on rite, 1/2 mi out of Koloa Town. For other sunshine markets pick up a schedule at Pohaku T's (3430 Poipu Rd, Koloa) or call 241-6390.

THE WINE SHOP. Has a modest, but distinctive wine selection along with gourmet cooking oils, sauces, syrups, teas, accessories and more. Wine tasting the first Sat of each month, 4 - 7 PM. In the east side of Koloa on Koloa Rd across from the post office. 742-7305. www.thewineshopkauai.com.
